Named for the London tournaments of the early 1900s, but its boom is modern — Carlsen and Kamsky made it a world-class weapon. The appeal: one sturdy setup against nearly everything Black tries, which is why busy improvers love it.

Every move explained

• d4: Grabs the center from the other side. The d4 pawn is defended by your queen from move one — sturdier than e4.
• Bf4: THE London move. The bishop gets out BEFORE you play e3 walls it in — same idea as the Caro-Kann, from the other side.
• Bf4: Same London setup, whatever they play. That’s the whole point.
