One of the oldest openings ever recorded — Italian masters like Greco were writing about it in the 1600s. It teaches chess development the way it was meant to be learned: knights out, bishop aimed at the weakest square, king safe. Five centuries later it's still the most played opening under 1400.

Every move explained

• e4: Grabs the center and opens lines for your queen and bishop. The best first move to learn chess with.
• Nf3: Develops a knight toward the center and attacks the e5 pawn — Black already has something to worry about.
• Bc4: The Italian bishop. It eyes f7, the weakest square in Black’s camp, and clears the way to castle.
